The utterly stupendous Mr. Muscular — a wonderfully characterful squeeze-action wooden acrobat toy with proper vintage circus credentials. Two bright red painted wooden uprights are joined at the base by a flat crossbar so the whole thing stands on a desk or shelf; a white cord stretched between the tops forms the trapeze bar. Mr. Muscular hangs from the bar — a flat articulated wooden figure with freely jointed arms and legs, a painted cream body with red and white horizontal stripes on his torso, a black anchor tattoo, dark chocolate brown boots and a magnificently moustachioed face with curly black moustache and cartoon eyes.

Squeeze the two uprights together and the cord slackens — Mr. Muscular swings, spins and flips. Release and he holds his pose. The mechanism is entirely satisfying and works just as well for adults as for children. This is a proper traditional desk toy as much as it is a child’s plaything.

Comes in a brilliant vintage circus-poster gift box printed in red and cream with the legend “Flying Circus – Animated Acrobatic Toy – He Will Astonish”. Makes a wonderful stocking filler, party bag gift or desk novelty. Mr. Muscular stands 10.5 cm tall.
