Part of the beloved Little People, BIG DREAMS series — beautifully illustrated biographical picture books that introduce young children to the lives of remarkable people who changed the world. This volume tells the story of Vincent van Gogh, the thoughtful, nature-loving boy from the Netherlands who became one of the most beloved painters in history.
Little Vincent was a thoughtful and quiet boy who lived in the Netherlands with his parents and siblings. Vincent was four years older than his brother Theo, but the two shared a very special bond. After leaving school, Vincent tried many different paths — including working as an art dealer, a job his uncle secured for him. At first everything went well, but it became clear that selling art was not the same as loving it. It was Theo who noticed the beautiful drawings Vincent included in his letters, and who suggested that he try being an artist. From then on, Vincent never looked back. He moved to Paris with Theo and discovered bright, vibrant colour — and because he had very little money and couldn’t afford to hire models, he simply painted himself, producing some of the most recognisable self-portraits in art history. After two years in the city, Vincent longed for peace and moved to the French countryside, where he developed his iconic style of thick, swirling, expressive brushstrokes and painted the sunflowers, wheat fields and starry skies that the whole world now knows by heart. Though he struggled deeply during his lifetime, his paintings have since become among the most celebrated ever created, and today he is recognised as one of the greatest artists who ever lived.
Told in simple, engaging language with gloriously luminous watercolour illustrations by Alette Straathof, this is a warm and visually captivating introduction to Van Gogh’s life and art. A facts and photos section at the back — including a biographical timeline — brings his story into the real world.
