Part of the beloved Little People, BIG DREAMS series — beautifully illustrated biographical picture books that introduce young children to the lives of remarkable people who changed the world. This volume tells the story of David Attenborough, the boy who grew up on a university campus in Leicester with a head full of curiosity and a lifelong love of the natural world — and who became the most celebrated nature broadcaster in history.
Little David grew up in Leicester, England, with his parents and two brothers. His father was the head of the local university and they lived on campus: a great place for curious minds. From an early age David was captivated by the world around him — collecting fossils on long cycling trips through the countryside, studying specimens in the science library, and building his own miniature animal museum. There was something amazing to him about plants and animals that were thousands of years old. When he was old enough, he went to university to study science and zoology, but what he wanted more than anything was to be close to the animals he was learning about. So he turned to television, and spent decades travelling the world to find them. He met turtles on the Galápagos Islands and gorillas in the African jungle. In Antarctica, he was introduced to all the members of a penguin family. From the depths of the ocean to the highest rainforest canopy, David told the world the untold stories of its most extraordinary creatures — and in doing so, inspired generations of people to love and protect the natural world.
Told in simple, engaging language with soft, gloriously detailed nature illustrations by Mikyo Noh, this is a warm and beautifully observed introduction to one of the greatest naturalists and broadcasters of all time. A facts and photos section at the back — including a biographical timeline — brings David’s story into the real world.
